ROSSELLO HOPES FOR DIALOGUE WITH US TREASURY

"Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello said on Friday he was "committed to esta-
blishing a working relationship" and fostering "open dialogue" with U.S. Treasury
Secretary Steven Mnuchin, after the two met in Washington. Rossello, who took o-
ffice on Jan. 2, met with Mnuchin to discuss his efforts to "put Puerto Rico's finan-
cial house in order," a statement from the governor's office said. Rossello has signed
more than 20 bills and executive orders aimed at cutting spending and fostering eco-
nomic growth, but Puerto Rico faces a long haul out of an economic crisis characte-
rized by a 45 percent poverty rate, near-insolvent public pensions and healthcare sys-
tems, and almost $70 billion in debt..."


LGBTT LEADER OPPOSES ADOPTION BILL LANGUAGE



"The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Transsexual (LGBTT) community 
will challenge the constitutionality of the newadoption law if it is approved with
“specific language that discriminates against” same-sex couples, Puerto Rico para 
Tod@s spokesman Pedro Julio Serrano announced late last week. According to an 
InterNews Service report, the activist said the legislative bill introduced by House
Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez contains language that discriminates against same-
sex couples. He noted that the bill specifies that only married couples determined by
the Civil Code will be able to adopt..."


HECTOR FERRER WINS PDP PRESIDENCY



"Former Popular Democratic Party (PDP) House Majority Whip Héctor Ferrer won 
the party’s presidency with 308 votes against former governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá, 
who garnered 156 votes. The other victorious officials are: Caguas mayor William 
Miranda Torres as the Governing Board’s member-at-large; Guayama mayor Eduar-
do Cintrón to represent the Guayama district; Carolina mayor José Carlos Aponte 
Dalmau to represent the Carolina district; and San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz
for the PDP vice presidency,  for which she ran unopposed..."
