Chamber Considers System To Elect Judges


The Chamber of Representatives' Judicial Commission is looking into 
the possibility of introducing a system which would add transparency
and citizen oversight of the judicial branch, as well as the possibility of
amending Puerto Rico's constitution to allow for judges to be elected.
The latter idea would not apply to Supreme Court judges. The aim is
to reduce corruption and bias in the island's courts, as reported by El
Nuevo Dia.


Health Sec.: No Chikungunya Deaths In PR


According to Noticel, Puerto Rico Health Secretary Ana C. Ríus 
Armendáriz, has stated that it has not been proven that any of the three 
people in the island suspected of having died of chikungunya did indeed 
die from the virus. Neither the tests carried out locally nor the ones
conducted by the Centers for Disease Control have show that chikungunya
was responsible for the deaths. So far, 1,636 cases of the virus have been
reported in Puerto Rico.


Sales Tax Increase Not Ruled Out


Internal Revenue Secretary Melba Acosta did not rule out an increase
in the percentage of the island's Sales & Use Tax (IVU) as part of 
upcoming tax reforms. Alejandro Garcia Padillas' administration is
currently considering several options offered by consulting firm KPMG
to fix Puerto Rico's ailing economy.


Calle 13 Leads The Pack at Latin Grammys

Calle 13 is heading for Latin Grammy gold: The Puerto Rican band is 
the top competitor for this year's awards.Eduardo Cabra of the group 
is nominated for 10 awards, including producer of the year, while 
the band is up for nine.

The Recording Academy announced Wednesday that producer and songwriter 
Andres Castro has eight nominations and mastering engineer Tom Coyne 
has seven. Calle 13 have been Latin Grammy favorites since the band broke 
on the scene with their 2005 self-titled debut.
