SEVEN DEAD DURING VIOLENT WEEKEND


Seven individuals were murdered across Puerto Rico from Friday night 
through Sunday morning, El Vocero reports. One of the dead was a 75-
year- old Canóvanas man, who seemed to have been killed during a home
break-in, while another man in Rio Piedras died after being struck on the
head by another man with a bottle of Brugal Rum. In another murder, a
44-year-old man was gunned down in Ponce in front of a business.
Another man, a 71-year old in Humacao, was shot to death from an auto-
mobile while smoking a cigarette on the street.


Man Who Murdered Neighbors Dies In Hospital


El Nuevo Dia reports that Luis G. Rivera Báez, the 59-year-old man
who murdered two of his neighbors -- a married couple -- last Wednesday
in the municipality of Coamo,  died in Centro Medico of Rio Piedras
after having shot himself in the chin following the murder. A 39-year-old
woman who was also shot by Rivera Báez managed to survive.


PR Residents Advised To Limit Outdoor Activities Due To Dust, Pollen


Primera Hora reports that a new wave of dust from the Sahara is mingling with
high levels of pollen and fungus in the air, making things difficult for allergy
and asthma sufferers, who are being advised to avoid being outdoors for prolonged
periods. Dust from Africa's Sahara Desert often travels on air currents and reaches Puerto Rico, affecting the island's weather.




Police Department in Elgin, Illinois Seeks Puerto Rican Recruits



In the wake of the situation in Ferguson, Mo., many police departments 
are realizing the importance of reflecting the communities they serve...
According to Elgin police, Latinos now make up roughly 45 percent 
of the city’s 110,000 residents. But that presence isn’t as well-
represented on Elgin’s police force.

“Right now, the city has an objective to more closely mirror our 
community, and one area where we are significantly underrepresented 
is in the Hispanic community,” Police Chief Jeff Swoboda says.
In fact, Chief Swoboda says out of his 180 officers, only 19 are 
Hispanic. He hopes a candidate recruitment trip to Puerto Rico 
will change that...
