First Case of Zika-Related Microcephaly Reported In Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN – Puerto Rico Health Secretary Ana Ríus announced Friday
the first local case of microcephaly, a severe birth defect in which babies
are born with abnormally small heads. The unborn fetus’ condition inclu-
ded severe calcification and enlargement of the brain lobes and the pres-
ence of the Zika virus. The analysis was conducted by the Health Depart-
ment “on the product of an unconcluded pregnancy.” The virus was not
