GUAYAMA (PRM) -- Gerardo De La Paz, the 49-year-old man who killed
Dutch globetrotter Laurens Higler last March in a hit and run auto accident
in Guayama, was sentenced today to six years and six months of prison for
negligent homicide and fleeing the scene of an accident. De La Paz, who re-
sided in the continental U.S. but was visiting Puerto Rico, hit the 26-year-old
Higler with a white Chevrolet Colorado late on the night of March 13 of last
year as Higler skateboarded on road PR-7702. While De La Paz fled the scene,
he turned himself in to Police five days later. Besides the hit and run, he was
also charged with driving with an expired license.
