Puerto Rico Status Hearing Held In House

The U.S. House Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs,
chaired by Don Young, held an oversight hearing Wednesday entitled, “Exa-
mining procedures regarding Puerto Rico’s political status and economic out-
look.”

The hearing’s purpose was to discuss the relationship between the current eco-
nomic crisis on the island and the issue of political status.

“While the decision of a change in political status must ultimately be made by
the citizens of Puerto Rico, [the U.S.] Congress has an obligation to monitor
the development of any change in status preference and act with reasonable di-
ligence on behalf of the populace, should future action be required,” the hear-
ing’s memo read.
